What Types of Hair Extensions are best?

tape-in hair extensions, fusion hair extensions, weft hair extensions

The "best" choice of hair extension will depend on individual preferences, lifestyle, and hair type, as well as the desired length, volume, and texture. Be sure to consult your stylist to determine the best type of extension and method of install for your hair.

There are several types available in the market today, but here's a list of 5 of the most common types of hair extensions to give you some reference when doing your research.

1.  Weave extensions: These are also known as sew-in extensions. At Ottalaus Salon we have two weave methods for install. One is the beaded weft method, which involves sewing wefts of hair around beads strategically placed on the natural hair in rows. Another method involves braiding the natural hair and sewing the extension onto the braids. They can last for several months and are a popular choice for many hair types.

2. Clip-in extensions: These are temporary hair extensions that can be clipped onto your natural hair. They are easy to apply and remove and are ideal for those who want to add volume and length to their hair for a special occasion.

3. Tape-in extensions: These are semi-permanent extensions that are applied using double-sided tape. They can last for several weeks and are a popular choice for those who want a natural-looking extension that is easy to maintain.

4. Fusion extensions: These involve fusing individual hair strands to the natural hair using heat or glue. They can last for several months and are a popular choice for those with fine hair.

5. Micro link extensions: These are also known as micro bead or nano-bead extensions and involve attaching individual hair strands to the natural hair using small metal or plastic beads. They can last for several months and are a popular choice for those who want a natural-looking extension that is also easy to maintain.

At Ottalaus Salon we have several stylists who are certified in multiple types of hair extensions and install methods. We’re here to help you find the perfect look!

Utah's dry winter air can wreak havoc on your hair, leaving it brittle and lifeless. To combat this, prioritize moisture with regular deep conditioning treatments and hydrating products like scalp serums. A voluminous blowout is a timeless hairstyle that can elevate your look. With the right techniques and products, you can achieve salon-quality results at home. Start by double shampooing your hair and applying a heat protectant, hair oil, mousse, smoothing cream, and texturizing spray. Next, rough-dry your hair to 85% dry. Then, use a round brush to style your hair in sections, paying attention to the direction of the curl. Finally, set your style with hairspray and gently shake out your curls for a voluminous, effortless finish.

Summer sun and activities can damage hair, but you can keep your hair (and extensions) healthy. Avoid sunscreens with Avobenzone, which can discolor hair extensions. Opt for mineral-based sunscreens with Zinc Oxide and apply carefully to minimize contact with extensions. Chlorine can damage extensions. Pre-treat hair with masks and consider regular salon treatments for deep conditioning if you must swim with extensions. Frequent swimmers may want to take a break from extensions to avoid long-term damage.
