6 Tips for Fabulous Wedding Hair and Makeup

Wedding Season is here!

Brides-to-be often have numerous questions regarding wedding hair and makeup for their special day. The work of
AnneMarie Krainich owner of Ottalaus Salon, has been featured in the 2013 Miss America pageant and bridal magazines such as Martha Stewart Weddings, Utah Bride Magazine and Gateway Bridal–so we thought, who better to ask for advice?

Question: How far in advance should I schedule my wedding hair and makeup trials and how do I choose the best stylist?

Anne Marie: 1-2 months before is ideal for you and your stylist. If you have special time restrictions, maybe three months to be safe. If you’re going to be on location you’ll definitely want 3-4 months in advance so that you can ensure you get the time you need.

Question:
What should I consider when looking for a makeup artist and hairstylist?

When it comes to choosing your stylist, knowing their style of work is crucial. Check out their portfolio and make sure their style lines up with your needs. Bold and exaggerated, edgy, soft, more natural, or glam. Stick to your personal style and how you envision your look will be on your big day. Also consider their schedules and if they’ll be able to accommodate your timing, work your schedule with theirs.

Q:How do I ensure my makeup looks good in both natural and artificial lighting?

AnneMarie: It’s important to choose the right foundation color for your skin tone and make sure it’s set well to not show creases.

Q: How to make your makeup and hair last?

AnneMarie: A good hair and makeup artist will have made effort to ensure your look stays fresh for the entire day with prep and setting products. Doing you makeup on your own? Use finish hairsprays. And for makeup use prep products such as primer, and a setting spray after you’ve applied it. Taking the extra time to apply these will help hold and keep everything looking how it should. If you plan on crying, make sure you’re prepared with waterproof mascara. And dab your tears with a tissue, never wipe, or it will smear your hard work potentially forcing you to reapply.

Q: How do I decide on a hairstyle that compliments my wedding dress and overall look?

Q: How do I decide on a hairstyle that compliments my wedding dress and overall look?

AnneMarie: This is a personal decision, and it should be made depending on your natural style. If you’re going for a more moderate style and your dress is more minimalist, you’ll want to mirror that look in your hair and makeup choices as well. If you are a little bit more of an aesthetically bold person naturally and your dress is simple, then you can enhance whatever you’d normally wear in your everyday makeup. Choose your style so that you feel like your authentic self.

Q: How do I decide on a hairstyle that compliments my wedding dress and overall look?

AM: Consider the cut and style of your dress for instance: If it’s a high neckline, you’d benefit with an updo to accentuate the neck of the dress. Do you have a detailed neckline? I’d suggest a more decorative, hair-up style to show off the detail of the dress. When you’re wearing a dress where the focal point is not at the neckline, try wearing your hair down with a style. Open back? Again I’d wear your hair down to draw attention to the cut.

These questions can serve as a starting point, but it's important to remember that beauty preferences and concerns may differ for each bride, so individual circumstances should be taken into account.

This is where a consultation helps to ensure everything is perfect for your big day.

Summer sun and activities can damage hair, but you can keep your hair (and extensions) healthy. Avoid sunscreens with Avobenzone, which can discolor hair extensions. Opt for mineral-based sunscreens with Zinc Oxide and apply carefully to minimize contact with extensions. Chlorine can damage extensions. Pre-treat hair with masks and consider regular salon treatments for deep conditioning if you must swim with extensions. Frequent swimmers may want to take a break from extensions to avoid long-term damage.
