Ottalaus Salon Shares 10 Tips for Color Treated Hair

Kelly Hamilton • February 20, 2023

Ottalaus Salon knows hair color!

One of the top questions we get asked by guests is, "How do I keep my color from fading too fast?"

This is especially true when it comes to vibrant fashion colors (check out this one by Starr-one of our top fashion colorists at Ottalaus South Jordan).

Our main goal at Ottalaus Salon is for our guests to leave feeling confident not only in their new look, but also in the best ways to care for and maintain that look.

It's important to note that some color fade is normal, it is artificial color after-all, but with proper care you can prolong the vibrancy of your color and maintain that fresh-from-the-salon look much longer whether it's fashion color or all-over gray coverage.

We've compiled a list of our top tips for caring for color-treated hair. Check it out below!

OTTALAUS SALON'S TOP 10 TIPS FOR COLOR TREATED HAIR

Ottalaus Salon color maintenance tips

1. Use a sulfate-free shampoo such as Kerastase Chroma Absolu Bain Chroma Respect for fine to medium color-treated hair: Sulfates can strip color from hair, so opt for a sulfate-free shampoo that's gentle on your hair.

2. Avoid hot water: Hot water can cause your color to fade faster. Wash your hair in lukewarm water instead.

3. Use a deep conditioning treatment like ORIBE Masque for Beautiful Color: Color-treated hair needs extra moisture, so use a deep conditioning treatment once a week.

4. Protect your hair from the sun: UV rays can cause color to fade and hair to become dry and brittle. Wear a hat or use a UV-protectant spray when spending time in the sun. We recommend ORIBE's Invisible Defense. This magical weightless mist sheilds from thermal damage, UV rays, and pollution.

5. Limit heat styling: Heat styling tools like flat irons and curling wands can damage your hair and cause color to fade faster. Try to limit your use of these tools or use a heat protectant spray (we love ORIBE's Royal Blowout Heat Styling Spray - it speeds dry time while repairing split ends!)

6. Don't over-wash your hair: Washing your hair too often can strip the color from your hair, so try to wash it every other day or every few days. When you do shampoo make sure your products are formulated for color treated hair. (Try the Chroma Absolu line mentioned in tip #1 for fabulous color care).

7. Use a color-protectant hair serum such as Kerastase Serum Chroma Thermique Hair Serum: A color-protectant serum can help lock in your color and add shine to your hair.

8. Get regular trims: Regular trims can help prevent split ends and keep your hair looking healthy and vibrant (Try out our Meet Your Stylist survey to find your perfect stylist and book your appointment today!).

9. Avoid chlorine and saltwater: Chlorine and saltwater can both cause your color to fade faster. Try to avoid swimming in pools or the ocean or wear a swim cap if you do. Don't like the look of a cap? Douse your hair with conditioner or hair oil and braid. Shampoo right after swimming with a chlorine removing or clarifying shampoo (Such as Malibu Swimmers Wellness). Deep condition after. For more tips on caring for swimmers hair, including removing green, check out our blog post

10. Use a color-protectant dry shampoo: Dry shampoo can help extend the time between washes, but make sure to use one that's specifically designed for color-treated hair. We're big fans of ORIBE's Gold Lust Dry Shampoo.

We hope these tips will help you keep your color treated locks happy and beautiful between every salon visit. Don't forget to discuss all hair care regimens with your stylist. They will have the best recommendations for your specific hair color service and hair type. Certain fashion colors are likely to have a few extra steps!

Happy hair days!

Summer sun and activities can damage hair, but you can keep your hair (and extensions) healthy. Avoid sunscreens with Avobenzone, which can discolor hair extensions. Opt for mineral-based sunscreens with Zinc Oxide and apply carefully to minimize contact with extensions. Chlorine can damage extensions. Pre-treat hair with masks and consider regular salon treatments for deep conditioning if you must swim with extensions. Frequent swimmers may want to take a break from extensions to avoid long-term damage.
