Did you know that 70% of women experience increased hair breakage and dryness during the summertime?
Unfortunately, lots of warm weather activities tend to be rough on the hair, which can lead to breakage and discomfort. Summer shouldn't mean sacrificing your hair health, you deserve to feel confident in your look! Let's explore some simple ways to keep your hair (and extensions) looking/feeling their best during the warmer months!
Get Your Hair Summer-Ready: Essential Info and Tips
We cannot say this enough, but SUNSCREEN WILL DESTROY YOUR EXTENSIONS! The culprit for that is a chemical called Avobenzone. Avobenzone, found in most brands, will dry and brittle your hair, even causing discoloration. Especially for our blondies. So we typically recommend looking for a more natural approach in any of your hair care routines!
Opt for sunscreens that are mineral based and contain Zinc Oxide, some great options include:
- Neutrogena Sheer Zinc Mineral Sunscreen
- Coola Fragrance-Free Mineral Body Sunscreen
- Sun Bum Mineral Sunscreen
Even though these are safer options for your hair, this doesn't mean lather it all up in your do! Try your best to avoid letting extensions and sunscreen mix!
Aerosol sprays are the biggest problem when it comes to getting sunscreen on your extensions because you have no control over where the spray goes. To avoid accidental crossovers, choose to use a rub or stick sunscreen. This way you have a much easier time controlling the lather.
Another huge problem that can arise, which not many people think of, is wearing your hair/extensions down. Now when your hair is down and resting on your body, they will pick up the sunscreen or tanning oil sitting on your skin. Which can then cause discoloration and breakage! The solution to this issue is taking the time to create a fun summer style that will keep your hair up and you worry-free!
Overall, try to keep your extensions out of the chlorine indefinitely. BUT it isn't the end of the world if they get a little bit wet during your summer fun!
Applying a hair masque from roots to ends (if you have extensions, avoid the roots) can help create a barrier between the chlorine and your hair. The masque will also aid in conditioning throughout the summer dryness!
An in-salon solution to fight chlorine damage is scheduling regular clarifying treatments and deep conditioning services. A clarifying treatment will help remove any buildup and the chemicals that get driven into your hair while swimming and sunbathing. The deep conditioning treatment will restore moisture and pH balance.

PSA: If you are an avid swimmer or beach bum, consider taking a break from extensions. Constantly trying to swim with extensions will cause more damage than good, and we want to keep your hair healthy and happy!
